FairSplitter ("we," "us," or "our") is operated by Sawan Patodia as an individual developer. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use the FairSplitter mobile application and website (collectively, the "Service").

By using FairSplitter, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

1. Information We Collect

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect:

• Email address
• Password (stored securely, never in plain text)
• First and last name
• Phone number (optional)
• Preferred currency

Financial Data

To provide the expense-splitting service, we collect:

• Expense details (description, amount, date, category, currency)
• Settlement records (amount, payment method, date)
• Group information (name, type, members)
• Pool contributions and expenses
• Balance calculations between friends and group members

We do not process payments or have access to your bank accounts, credit cards, or payment service credentials.

Device Contacts

With your explicit permission, FairSplitter can access your device contacts to help you find friends who already use the app. Contact data is used solely for matching against existing FairSplitter users and sending invitations. We do not store your full contact list on our servers.

Information We Do Not Collect

• Location or GPS data
• Photos or camera data
• Device advertising identifiers (IDFA, GAID)
• Browsing history or cookies

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

• Create and manage your account
• Provide expense tracking, splitting, and settlement features
• Calculate balances between you and your friends or group members
• Send account-related emails (verification, password reset)
• Send in-app notifications about expenses, settlements, and friend requests
• Help you find and connect with friends on the platform
• Improve and maintain the Service

3. Information Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties.

Your information is shared only in the following limited ways:

• With other FairSplitter users: Your name and email are visible to your friends and group members so they can identify you in shared expenses and settlements.
• Service providers: We use cloud infrastructure providers (AWS) to host and operate the Service. These providers process data on our behalf under strict confidentiality obligations.
• Legal requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request.

4. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored on secure servers hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS). All data transmitted between the app and our servers is encrypted using HTTPS/TLS.

Authentication tokens are stored locally on your device. We use token-based authentication with automatic session refresh to keep your account secure.

While we implement commercially reasonable security measures, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.

5. Data Retention

We retain your account information and associated data for as long as your account is active. If you request deletion of your account, we will delete your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal or regulatory purposes.

Expense and settlement records shared with other users may remain visible to those users even after your account is deleted, but your personal identifiers will be removed.

6. Your Rights

You have the right to:

• Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
• Update: Correct or update your account information at any time through the app.
• Delete: Request deletion of your account and personal data.
• Withdraw consent: Revoke contact access permissions through your device settings at any time.

7. Children's Privacy

FairSplitter is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.

8. Third-Party Services

FairSplitter does not currently integrate third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services. If this changes in the future, we will update this policy accordingly.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the updated policy in the app or on our website, with a revised "Last updated" date.

Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
